On March 6th, fans from all over the Bay Area flocked to Chase Center for Tyler the Creator’s “Chromakopia Tour.” The following day, March 7th, a surprising amount of San Domenico students walked around sporting their new concert merch.
His newest album titled, “Chromakopia”, came out in October and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart with 299,500 equivalent album units sold in its first week which was his best sales and streaming week ever.
I was lucky enough to be able to go with my little brother for his first ever concert. I’ve enjoyed Tyler the Creator’s music for a while now, but nowhere near as much as my 13-year-old brother, Mason Whaley. After we were gifted the tickets as Christmas presents, each and every one of our car rides were filled with his music in preparation for the concert, and one of my favorite parts of the whole night was getting to see how happy he was.
Fans and non fans alike were in awe of the show, several of whom go to San Domenico.
“Everything was so exciting,” Luna Barnes, freshman who attended the concert with her friend Myla Macaitis said. “The set design, and every song he played was so great.”
The only complaint was the length of the merch lines. Simply, the amount of people there created lines for merch stands that could last hours.
“I’m a huge Tyler Fan,” Macaitis said. “It was a 10/10 experience; he was just a great performer in general.”
Someone else who was lucky enough to experience the concert, is our beloved front desk, AnnaMarie Bonura, or more commonly known as Ms. B. She went with her son, who is a huge fan, for his first concert even though she did not know much about Tyler the Creator’s music.
“It was absolutely amazing,” Bonura said. “I’m not even a rap fan, but it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to in my life.”
Tyler the Creator’s unique nature contributes greatly to his shows. With his lively stage presence and intricate story telling, he held the audience captivated the entire two hours of the show.
With two stages he would switch between, and beautiful set design, the show was well worth the money. One stage depicted a bedroom, where he had a couch, and a record player. Every time he decided to switch albums, he would flip through all of his vinyls building lots of suspense before picking his next song.
Overall, Tyler the Creator’s Chromakopia Tour was an unforgettable experience for both longtime fans and new ones alike. His dynamic stage presence, creative storytelling and visually stunning production made for a night that left the audience in awe. Whether it was a first concert or one of many, the performance Tyler brought to Chase Center proved why every seat was filled.
