San Domenico’s incredible theater department is putting on another play! “Bernhard/Hamlet” is an exciting thriller which takes place during the production of “Hamlet,” in which Sarah Bernhardt produced and starred. Bernhardt was the biggest star of the world for any gender at the time. But there was a lot of push back towards Bernhardt playing Hamlet because she was a woman.
She dealt with her struggles of figuring out how to play the role of Hamlet while also working against the societal pressure not to play the role of a man.
Jen Grimes, Upper School theater teacher and director of the play, talked about the upcoming production, highlighting the up-and-down aspect of the show.
“One of the great things about the play is there’s a lot of variety in it because you see so many different levels,” Grimes said. “And, there’s comic scenes, there’s serious scenes, there’s scenes that are in between, there’s emotional scenes, and all together that make for a really neat experience.”
The shows are Thursday, March 21 at 7:30 Friday, March 22 at 7:30 Saturday March 23 at 7:30 and Sunday March 24 at 2:00 pm, with Sunday also being senior speeches. All shows are in Dominican hall. Tickets are selling out fast so make sure to order them now while you still can.
Caroline Pirsch, a senior and actor in the show, talks about the upcoming production.
“I’m super excited, we’ve definitely put a lot of work into it,” Pirsch says. “I’d say that it’s different from shows that we’ve done in the past because it’s less comedy and more drama.”
The production is going to be super exciting and everyone should go see it and support the arts program. Tickets can be found from QR codes around campus as well as sent out through email.
