Thursday evening, San Domenico students logged on to Canvas to be met with a message that the site was under maintenance.
Instructure, Canvas’ parent company, disclosed on May 1 that it “experienced a cybersecurity incident perpetrated by a criminal threat actor.”
The company said the breach had been “contained” the next day but student and staff data from some institutions appeared to have been exposed.
The hackers injected an HTML file that altered the login screens to display their message. The group is ransoming individual schools in lieu of releasing personal data, which includes students’ private information, including their names, student ID numbers, personal email addresses, and messages sent between teachers and students.
The Panther Press investigated this issue as it pertains to our school, and the hackers’ list of victim schools does not include San Domenico School. However, multiple large high schools and K-12 schools throughout the country have been affected.
